Design & Commissioning of a Memorial for Survivors of Institutional Abuse

As part of the Government’s implementation of the recommendations of the Ryan Report, a Committee was appointed by the Minister for Education & Skills to oversee the design and commissioning of a memorial for survivors of Institutional Abuse.

Following the consultative process, a competition is being organised and administered on behalf of the Committee by the Commissioners of Public Works. The competition is open to individuals and consortia and to professional and non-professional applicants.

Stage 1 of the competition, seeking expressions of interest, is now being launched. The closing date for receipt of expressions of interest is Thursday 13th of October 2011. A short-list of no more than ten applicants will be selected to go forward to Stage 2, which will require those short-listed to submit detailed and specific proposals for each stage of the design, planning and realisation of the memorial.

A document outlining details of the competition, including selection criteria, indicative dates, and competition jury membership is available on the Department of Education & Skills web-site www.education.ie and www.publicart.ie

A budget of up to € 500,000 is being set aside for the project which will be managed by the OPW.

Justice should come first , The victims must be Compansated properly . no doubt the shower sitting on the education board will drown themselves in Glory for that is what this memorial is really about.

    i
think the graveyards of ireland and further afield
are full of monuments to the abused children, therefore i think no public one is needed.as better use could be made of the money it is going to cost maybe a plaque in the garden of remberence would be better.

  3. dr margaret kennedy says:

glad you are on committee. the right person to represent all disabled victims great stuff. but hope it’s goona be more than a flippin rose bush in merrion sq. but not so expensive that funds couldn’t be used better. difficult balance good luck

  4. Paddy says:

I appreciate your kind comment Jack. Thanks. Paddy

  5. jack dooley says:

Paddy,Thank you for your reply.Your representation in that position,on behalf of the survivors who have gone, also we who remain, is to be welcomed .I have taken note of what you say , so keep well Paddy, God bless.

  6. Paddy says:

Jack, it’s difficult to know how many survivors were against the memorial – not so difficult to know how many are opposed to the Statutory Trust Fund. Petitions run on this website and other sites show a lot of people opposed to the Fund. You may or may not be aware that I was appointed by the Government to serve on the Memorial Committee – something I’m happy to do. I suggest that you send your suggestion to the Memorial Committee and see what happens from there. Obviously, I’m not in a position to comment on it one way or the other. All I’m saying is that nothing regarding the memorial is ruled in or out. Paddy.

  7. jack dooley says:

Please correct me if iam wrong, did most survivors not want this memorial to be erected or the Statutory Fund to go ahead, but it seems both will go ahead. So may I suggest a STONE OR BRICK from each institution be built into the design and each institution’s name from whence the stone or brick came from, be implanted on the item.So may those who have gone, somehow know they will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.Thank you all.

On the panel that chooses the winners of such a prize should be the men and women who are still amongst us who went through slavery and torture and sexual abuse at the hands of the Roman Catholic Church . I want no stone or dead monument,

  9. nome de guerre says:

I want a childrens Noble Prize to be awarded to them or those who have excelled in child protection around the world . The finast monument for me would be knowing that some children have had a better deal than I had at the hands of the Irish Christian Brothers in Salthill Galway .It should be awarded annually at what was Letterfrack Industrial School , close to the graves of over a hundred children who never made it out of there , and who have found their final resting place there . A memorial concert by irelands best musicians should be held there on that day and televised to the nation . This is my idea of a living memorial , this is our “Shoah “.

  10. James Moy says:

Spot on Mr Dooley, we are indeed the living memorial as you so rightly say. But so the rest of the world never forget, if it is to be put into effect, i sincerely hope it highlight’s the extreme wicked damage that the R/C/Church inflicted on the Children that had the misfortune to pass through it’s care. And also highlight’s the Irish Government’s incompetence and Law’s that subjected Ireland’s Children to such horrendous abuse .

All suggestions for a memorial should be sent to the Memorial Committee at the Department of Education. You’ll find details of the competition on my website under the heading “A Memorial Competition” on the right hand side of the page. There are three or four different sections that you might consider reading. Paddy.

  13. jack dooley says:

Paddy,I hope you are keeping well. The memorial which is been spoken of is still living amongst us, we are the memorial, The Survivors Ourselves. And those gone before us, NEVER TO BE FORGOTTON.

  14. FXR says:

It might be worth proposing it just so the record of their rejection of a stark reminder of their own hypocrisy is on record.

Now if I can just find out how to go about it. Do I need a drawing or a written outline or a video of a few people playing the characters or wot?

  15. Kate says:

FXR go for it! It sounds like you have the basis of a fantastic memorial. But, can we take it? Are we able for the reality of what you propose? I would like to think we, as a society, are mature enough to handle it. I, personally, think it would be the stark reminder that we all need so that we keep to the forefront of our minds the horror of what has happened, and, hopefully, prevent from now on. So, FXR go for it!

  16. Paddy says:

Frank. As far as I’m aware there isn’t a thing in the world to stop you entering for the competition with whatever you deem fit to be a Memorial to people who were abused while in the care of the State and religious orders. If you do decide to enter for the competition then I wish you and all entrants, the very best of luck. Paddy.

  17. FXR says:

Ok Paddy I have a few ideas.

It should be located in O’Connell street just down from the Spire.

It would be two small children, one pointing an accusing finger at the GPO. The other would be cowering with one arm raised trying to protect himself.

Behind the children a hunched Bertie Ahern would be carrying the Pope riding on his shoulders. Bertie would be wearing a nuns head dress and a christian brothers dog collar. Around his neck would be a Mister T starter kit made up of crucifixes and holy medals. It would be the full crawthumpers regalia.

Herr Pope would be glaring down on the child and his arm would be raised about to strike. He’d be holding a leather strap like the brothers and nuns used. On the plinth would be that bollocks from the proclamation about “cherishing all the children of the nation”.

I’m going to call it The Monument to Irish Hypocrisy.

  18. Paddy says:

Well! GO to work on it then FXR!

  19. FXR says:

I can see queue forming now of the well got and the artsy fartsy types with their bleedin’ interpretations of what they have no experience of.

The memorial should be a truck load of arrest papers that name everyone from Bertie Ahern to the Pope.
