Ruari Quinn’s speech to Dáil Eireann following the publication of the Report of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse (The Ryan Report)
Mr. Quinn is now Minister with responsibility for Education as well as other Portfolios.
Shattering
“The Ryan Commission report has shone a powerful light into probably the darkest corner of the history of the State,” the Taoiseach said. “It contains a shattering litany of abuse of children in care in this country over many decades. In doing so, it presents a searing indictment of the people who perpetrated that abuse, of the religious congregations who ran the institutions in which it took place, and of the organs of the State which failed in their duty to care for the children.”
Launching a scathing attack on the Department of Education, Labour’s Ruairi Quinn said he had lodged a series of simple questions since February seeking details about the nature and ownership of schools and the location and name of schools in the ownership of a religious order or a Roman Catholic bishop.
However, the department had refused to provide such information.
“Either officials in the department are members of secret societies, such as the Knights of St Columbanus and Opus Dei, and have taken it upon themselves to protect the interests of these clerical orders at this point in time. . . or, alternatively, the minister is politically incompetent and incapable of managing the department,” Mr Quinn told the Dail.
Ireland is the only country in Europe where the primary school system is controlled by “private organisations”, Mr Quinn said.
In order to begin the transfer of schools out of “private” ownership, the department needed to provide an inventory of religious assets.
However, Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe has refused to provide details to the Opposition, the Labour Party said.
Mr Quinn added: “I do not believe Mr O’Keeffe, is a bad man. I do not believe he is a Catholic right-wing secret obscurantist, but many of the people working for him on a permanent salary — he will be gone in a couple of years — most certainly are, or else they are incompetent, lazy and destructive.”
The Labour spokesman concluded there was a continuing culture of “deferment and obedience” to the Catholic Church in the department.

My own opinion is.. What do we need a statutory fund for? Does our government have any right to decide how the funds should be spent? NO. surely thats for victims to decide. Victims are scattered worldwide and a fund would be of absolutely no use to most. These so called groups out there do not represent the vast majority of victims, in fact they have no contact whatsoever with most of them. Most of us are almost 60, what use is education to us now.
When the Ryan report came out, Bertie Ahearn promised to LISTEN TO THE VICTIMS . But nobody is listening. Our pleas are falling on deaf ears. Closure may only come when the powers that be speak to us and most importantly LISTEN to what we say.

I was going to make specific comments, specifically with regard to what Angry and Robert had to say. But, I’ll just say this: Ireland STILL is a country contaminated by the dogma of the Vatican. In other words, the collective Irish psyche is still very much motivated (driven) by its tradition of Roman Catholicism. And Rory Quinn (et al) is part of that collective contamination. So, personally, I will not be surprised if he doesn’t do anything constructive to change the prevailing status quo in Ireland.
To paraphrase “Angry”: Does Rory Quinn realise what he’s up against? Perhaps he does. Perhaps he doesn’t. Perhaps he’s part of The Club of Rome? Most Irish politicians are, unfortunately.
DOES ANYONE REALIZE THE THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF SURVIVORS IN RURAL AREAS, WITHOUT ANY NEWS WITHOUT ANY KNOWLEDGE AND NO GROUP

IT IS VERY HARD TO GET ANY NEWS IT IS LIKE THERE IS NOTHING AT ALL FOR THEM.

IN RURAL AREAS SURVIVORS ARE SO VERY MUCH ALONE AND THAT IS SO DANGEROUS AS THEY TRY TO COPE JUST BEING LONELY WITH THE PAST.
EVERYONE KNOWS HOW HARD IT IS TO BE LONELY BUT ONLY SURVIVORS KNOW HOW BAD IT IS TO BE LEFT WITH SUCH A HISTORY AS OURS.
THE GROUPS WHO CLAIM TO SUPPORT HAVE NOT EVEN TEMPTED, SORRY WHAT IS THE HSE PAYING FOR?

Ireland is not the land, land is dead, she is the people and the people alone are the very life of Ireland, innocent lives have been destroyed but not rebuilt, how can anyone allow such destruction take place. If the people of Ireland do not matter to the government then there is no Ireland and nothing to make deals about.
Greed and corruption is the enemy of the people of Ireland and those who still allow this to happen to the very people it claims to represent should pack their bags and never return.

Lets wish Rauairi Quinn all the best and offer support and encouragement to him at every opportunity in the hope that as he can obviously ‘talk the talk’ the he should be encouraged to ‘walk the walk’.
Alternativey the survivors could stand on the side lines and watch him coyly as he fights battles with the forces of evil. And that will be a cold experience for any human. It would be far more encouraging to him (to feel the warmth and support from the people he is proposing to serve in this dreadful task ahead of him.
The catholic church will emerge from greyness gradually in his political landscape as they gauge and observe his early days. Soon they will seek out his enemies and start a smear campaign and gradually subvert his office as best they can. When that does not succeed, they will hint at a ‘pullout’ from Ireland of all their institutes while reminding him what a disaster it will be for Ireland and him politically. IN reality, that very act of pulling out would be an enormous opportunity for Ireland and the Irish government to break away finally from the culture of secretive and unaccountable power structures that the reformation of the country so badly needs. The latter is what the clerics want and will attempt to negotiate because that is how it survives. Background grey influences organising deals secretly with the knowledge of the people.
Ratzinger and his power show must be kept out of Ireland.
Mr Quinns performance in the next 100 days will be the performance of the govenment for the remainder of its tenure. Clerics have no right to sit in departments especially the Department of Defence.This is not Iran.
As an unrepresented survivor I am e-mailing Mr. Quinn from here in Arizona before I head home to Canada, that is the only way we will be heard.

i also contacted the irish times and asked them if they know of any news regarding the statuary fund as the information is hard to come by, i also asked if they could investigate the reasons for the free numbers to be cancelled for survivors use to get information.

It would also be good to point out to Mr Quinn that the Church, according to the informaiton that was provided to me a time back, still has “political” representation on various Education committees. Indeed I have been informed that they also have representation on similar entities at the Department of Defence.
Makes one wonder – is or has the Pope prepared to plan a coup to make the takeover complete, since they already operate their own legal system.
It would be good to establish what government committees and in what government departments they have representation and more importantly why they have and should they have this level of influence in the decision making process.
My understanding from previous information is that the Catholic Church has representation in 4 government departments.

IT WOULD GO SOME WAY TO RESOLVING THIS CONSTANT BLEEDING AND CANCEROUS CHANCRE ON GENUINE SURVIVORS IF RUAIRI QUINN`S FIRST TASK WAS TO REMOVE AND DISBAND THESE INCOMPETENT, UNQUALIFIED AND POLITICALLY APPOINTED SUBVERSIVES WHO WERE FUNDED TO APPLY A POLICY OF DIVIDE AND CONQUEOR. A FURTHER POINT FOR RUAIRI QUINN TO CONSIDER WOULD BE TO GIVE RECOGNITION TO SURVIVORS IN THE UK WHO FORMED MORE THAN A THIRD OF THOSE WHO WENT TO THE REDRESS BOARD. CONSIDERATION MUST BE GIVEN TO THE FORMING OF A DEDICATED LEGAL TEAM TO REPRESENT SURVIVORS IN THE MANNER WHICH THEY DESERVE, AND I DONT MEAN “” PUBLIC FOOT WASHING FROLICS WHICH BENEFIT THE CHURCH””.

So now Mr Quinn lets see how credible you are now that you are in charge of that department. Go on Mr Quinn and show Ireland that you are more than rhetoric. We can begin with the Trust Fund. We do not want it!. Are you listening Mr Quinn?.Your government states that honesty is their only policy, well show us an example of honesty by heeding our wishes.
