  1. there was no imunity for all of us yet we were children. the day i was taken to court as a small child there was no imunity for my protection. and it was against the laws of Ireland. yet we went by hundreds. if the laws protect people who have abused the survivers. its still the same way of looking at things as in the fifties.

  2. Hi:

Interesting that there is a reference to Brehon law. The only reference to this that I am aware of in Irish Law was the Supreme court case of State v King 1977 ( I think). This case quoted the role of the Shanakees in the formation of Irish culture (people who were of no fixed abode and did not carry money) and therefore would have been imprisoned under the 1824 Vagrancy Act which has a section for “wandering abroad without due means of support”. The case was taken by a “homeless” man, Frank King after being imprisoned while going to his abode and part time job as a watchman in Ranelagh via Ailesbury Rd. I believe he obtained about £7000 in damages for a 3 month sentence. His legal team were (?)Sorohan and then junior called Paddy Gageby.

I think this puts a context on the potential value and cost of suffering an “incorrect” imprisonment.

    Hopefully this is of interest.

Neville Francis King Plaintiff v. The Attorney General and The Director of Public Prosecutions Defendants

    [1976No. 3089P]
    High Court 24th October 1978
    31st July 1980

    Constitution – Statute – Validity – Severance – Statute enacted prior to 1922 – Criminal offence -Loitering with intent to commit felony – Locus standi – Intention of parliament – Vagrancy Act,1824 (5 Geo. 4, c. 83), s. 4 – Prevention of Crimes Act, 1871 (34 & 35 Vict. c. 112), s. 15 – PenalServitude Act, 1891 (54 & 55 Vict. c. 69), s. 7 – Constitution of Ireland, 1937, Articles 38, 40, 50.

Section 4 of the Act of 1824 did not apply to Ireland originally; it was extended to Ireland by s. 15 of the Act of 1871. Section 4 of the Act of 1824 created many offences, of which one was the possession of housebreaking implements with the intention of committing a felony.

Another of the offences created by s. 4 of the Act of 1824 was the frequenting by “every suspected person or reputed thief” of any of the places therein described with the intention of committing a felony. Section 15 of the Act of 1871 also provided that, in order to prove that a suspected person had intended to commit a felony, it was not necessary to show that he was guilty of any particular act tending to show his purpose or intent and that he could be convicted if, from the circumstances and from his known character, it appeared to the court that his intention had been to commit a felony. By s. 7 of the Act of 1891 it was provided that, in construing the provisions of s. 4 of the Act of 1824 relating to the frequenting of the said places by suspected persons and reputed thieves with the said intent, those provisions should apply to every such person “loitering about or in” any of the said places with the said intent.

On the 13th November, 1975, the plaintiff was convicted in the District Court at the hearing of a complaint that on a certain occasion he, being a suspected person, was found loitering in a public place with intent to steal, contrary to s. 4 of the Act of 1824. On the same date he was convicted in that court at the hearing of a complaint that, on the same occasion, he had in his possession housebreaking implements with intent to steal, contrary to s. 4 of the Act of 1824. Section 4 of the Act of 1824 was the only enactment mentioned in the orders of conviction made by the District Court in relation to those complaints. On the 2nd July, 1976, the District Court made an order convicting the plaintiff of having been found, as a suspected person, on another occasion loitering in a public place with intent to steal, contrary to s. 4 of the Act of 1824 as amended by the Acts of 1871 and 1891. The plaintiff brought an action in the High Court in which he claimed a declaration that the provisions of s. 4 of the Act of 1824 and s. 15 of the Act of 1871 and s. 7 of the Act of 1891 were inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution of Ireland, 1937, and had not been continued in force by Article 50, s. 1, of the Constitution; he also claimed a declaration that the three orders of conviction made by the District Court were invalid.

Held by McWilliam J., in giving judgment for the plaintiff, 1, that the portion of s. 4 of the Act of 1824 relating to the offence committed by every suspected person or reputed thief who frequents the places therein mentioned (as amended) was inconsistent with the provisions of the Constitution of Ireland, 1937 (a) by infringing the concept of justice, implicit in the Constitution, by reason of the amendment concerning the proof of intent and (b) by infringing the principle of equality before the law, declared in Article 40, s. 1, by reason of being applicable only to every suspected person or reputed thief.

I agree totally Martha. Irish children were and are brainwashed from birth by the men and women of god, so it will take a lot to wake them up.

Yes,women in Ireland suffered and still suffer from being under the control of the Vatican men of “god”.

I know that lady Justice- Nemesis will deliver justice.

I am putting this here Paddy in the hope of waking up the walking dead of Eire.

    “Patriarchy is the insidious cultural force governing our planet today;
    a hierarchal system supporting male domination and elite supremacy;
rooted in all religious & political belief systems that patronize a male GOD,
give MAN dominion over the Earth or appoint MAN head of household.

Patriarchy has dominated and ruled the world for many centuries now keeping the numerous powers and gifts of the female under its control.

Since the Goddess as Divinity, Earth, Mother & Life-Giver has been deliberately
suppressed, supplanted & diminished by patriarchal religions & social systems,
along with the feminine powers of birthing & sustaining all life on earth,
it has sadly resulted in the sick and dysfunctional world we live in today!

Patriarchy creates illusions of male supremacy, power & importance.

Of course, the idea of male supremacy is absurd, but when we uphold this
delusion we are actually supporting & sustaining a hierarchal system that
keeps many people oppressed, sick, dependent, poor or powerless.

We must also realize that by relinquishing our power to Patriarchy we actually justify, condone or rationalize condescending or busive treatment toward females, children, animals, Nature, any other life-form considered less valuable!

Patriarchy stifles our true essence by creating a false sense of reality.
It perpetuates shame and deterioration of the soul because it goes against natural forces & cycles of life. It is also a root cause of wars, misogyny, racism, sexism, homophobia, codependency, alcoholism,
addiction, workaholism, eating disorders, violence, crime, genocide & many other abuses and diseases we see in the world today.

The truth is, we are all spiritual beings, one with Nature, one in Spirit, valuable and complete in the framework of our design, and we must reclaim our divinity, our own unique mysteries, and our connection with the natural world in order to fully recover.

The laws and forces that govern life, yin and yang, are balanced, flowing harmoniously and equally between polarities.
If we are not aligned with the natural forces of life we stay imbalanced … therefore unhealthy.

Males as well as females are gravely affected by Patriarchy because it teaches males to be god & females to serve god…
thereby defining roles for us that are impossible to emulate without creating conflict and confusion in our basic natures and in our relationships with one another. Patriarchy creates wars within the SELF, and when there’s conflict and stress within
there is always discord, dis-ease & dysfunction without.

In the Sisterhood of the Sacred Circle…
We are reclaiming our feminine power, unique mysteries, rites of passage & celebrations to heal and recreate our lives.

We are also freeing ourselves from the mental and emotional bondage of Patriarchy because it lies at the core of our diseases,
    dysfunctions, compulsions, addictions & codependency…
and true recovery isn’t possible until we are restored to sanity & wholeness as true children of the Earth. ”

Portia, if you (or anyone else) thinks you are going to get a rational response from these Roman Catholic “men”, or their female cohorts, think again. And let’s be honest here, the Irish people, per se, are nothing but a bunch of programmed RC robots.

The historical experience of the Magdalene Laundry women is really no different than that of most Irish women – not that Irish men escaped being routinely violated as children either. THINK about it…

  5. Portia says:

EVERY HUMAN NEED IS A HUMAN RIGHT.!!!

I would not worry about the so called “legal” argument as the word law means LIE in English.

Put simply- what happened was WRONG.!!!!!!!!!!!

The word you all seek is JUSTICE Brehon Law style, Irish style rather than the use of maritime law.

The fact of the matter is, these beautiful women were abused and tortured simply for being women who did not follow the patriarchal way of entering the institution of marriage, so for that they were institutionalised in prisons called laundries, where their babies were taken from them and sold to rich NEEDY people for profit- call it a donation if you want- but it is still a fee in exchange for goods- children.

Now, those children suffer from not knowing their identity- their human right.

If there was nothing to hide, then adoptions would be open.

The research exists from Australia to prove the pain and human misery endured by mothers whose babies were stolen and the adoptees- always searching to be made whole by finding their only mother – the one who created them, the one who carried them for 40 weeks, nourished them, talked to them and so wanted to raise them herself as is her god given right. But men in dresses and in suits decided otherwise.Men who would never know what motherhood is all about, because they cane never experience it, yet pass laws on it, when it is none of their business.

“Mr. Cowen asserts that the “position of women in [Magdalene] laundries was not analogous with that of children in residential institutions” (April 2010), and Dermot Ahern claims, repeatedly, that “the majority of females who entered or were placed in Magdalen Laundries … did so without any direct involvement of the State.”

What colour is the sky in these men’s worlds? Clearly they are clueless as to what went on or they are using deceptive intelligence to ignore it.

Ah sure they were only women- second class in the eyes of the church and state as Vatican controlled the state from a distance.

So, the women were forced into the laundries by their parents to keep the “shame” hidden and the state did nothing to help.?

The women entered the prison laundries because they were forced into it by society- oh yes, we are the state, we as brothers and sisters of these women know fine well what went on in secret.

Remember, how we girls were threatened with the Magdalene prisons if we got pregnant or behaved like whores- which in truth means HORASIS- but you wont see that written in the patriarchal version of history.

Denial is refusing accepting responsibility- collective responsibility- as church and state were involved. The state represents us.!!!!!

We know how our parents were controlled by the church re unmarried mothers- oh the shame of it.!!!! Our parents lived in fear of the church and the law as both were controlled by the same patriarchal system.

The shunning of unmarried mothers still exist with 85% of children in corporate care being from unmarried women.

Why? Because we have not admitted what was done to the Magdalene’s.

As a nation of men and women, we are a disgrace and no wonder the world looks on and sees us for what we are.

At least the indigenous women of Australia received an apology for the forced adopion racket.

SO come on Irish men and women- it is simple.

    ONE WORD- SORRY.!!!!!!!
